1993 115 Mariner tilt/trim problem

While loading the boat this past Saturday after a day on Sakakawea chasing salmon I hit the switch to raise the motor but rather then quickly raising the motor as usual it VERY slowly and quietly inched the motor up.  Thought now what but forgot all about it until we backed it in the water on Sunday morning.  Hit the switch to lower the motor and NOTHING at all.

I can hear the relays engaging and I have power in the wires just above the electric motor but nothing else happens.

What would you folks suggest, just replace the electric motor or thinking that it might be just a matter of time before something shows up with the hydraulic ram, replace the whole unit?

What would you do?

I had the same thing happen with my 45 hp Mariner (aftermarket tilt/trim though). Took off the electric motor and it was just a broken spring. Cleaned it up good, replaced the spring and works like a charm. One possibility. Also if the battery is extremely low (but I would guess you checked that first).

You can't aim a duck to death.

after several years of ownership my power trim & tilt in my 94' 70hp force by mercury marine, (a lot like a mariner) would intermitently quit, usually when leaving the ramp, i would tap it with a plier and it would work. i checked on line and could not get a replacement motor, only the entire housing with the motor in it 175.00. i removed the motor, took it to a motor rewind place in minot. he checked and found the brushes for it. but before ordering he disassembled it and found the wires to the brushes were not layed in the housing correctly and restricted the movement of the brushes (with spring) as the brushes wear. he straightened them out and the motor works perfect. 35.00

Continued trying to track down the reason for the electric motor not working on my boat's hydraulic lift last night.  This is what I found when I opened it up.

Checked and have juice at the brushes.  Worked the armature back and forth by hand.  Shined up the top of the armature and the brushes with emery cloth, put it back together, and still not a thing.

I'm beginning to think I need to find a replacement motor.   :)

Any thoughts from you motor savvy folks?
