measure-it Joined: 01/27/2009 Location: ND	Being under the age to take hunter safety classes, the youngster needs to have the proper licenses-general, small game-and be accompanied in the feild by a parent or guardian.

mthorpe Joined: 01/17/2003 Location: ND	my now 10 year old has been shooting pheasant, geese, ducks for 3 years now. I trust him with a shotgun more then most adults. just my .02

You do realize the average age of the shooter in hunting accidents in ND last year was 34 years old, right? No, you probably didn't, otherwise you wouldn't be making such stupid comments.

eyexer Joined: 02/28/2007 Location: ND	I started hunting at age 7. It basically boils down to the maturity level at a given age. there are 20 years olds that shouldn't be near a gun. there are 10 year olds that are safer to be around than some adults.

Starhunter Joined: 05/28/2002 Location: ND	Isn't hunters safety what a dad teaches their young one starting with pop guns, then to BB guns and so on? My boys started young and we shoot clay birds alot and they are very safe. My older boy went through hunters safety in Steele three years ago because Bismarck was full or something. It was a two day class and they ran the local boys through without even having to past the test legitimately, what good was hunters safety to them any way?

BringingTheRain Joined: 01/05/2010 Location: nd	I thought the earliest you could start hunting upland and waterfowl was 11? 9 is to young in my opinion. 9 is bb gun age.

AR-15 Joined: 10/10/2009 Location: ND	My son and his friend started at 8 yrs. old, I wouldn't change a thing, we had alot of fun . These guys are now 20 yrs. old and are good hunters and good workers

tearbear Joined: 11/12/2007 Location: ND	I am a certified hunters safety instructor and will tell you that most 9-12 year olds should only be hunting under very controlled situations. The majority of them are not mature or capable of handling the opportunities in the field safely!!! Actually you should probally increase that age to 16 years old!!! I understand that some children are more mature than others, they just haven't had all the experiences in the field to be safe in all situations, especially pheasant hunting. I know I don't want to be walking side by side ten yards apart in a CRP field with a 9 year old holding a shotgun when a rooster gets up between us!! It's really up to the parent to put them in a situation that is safe for everybody and that they can control so the child can learn to be a safe and responsible hunter. The parent also needs to understand this will probally severely limit their opportunities in the field when they are out with the youth!

perchpirate Joined: 03/11/2008 Location: MT	9 yrs. is definitely not too old to start hunting. The important thing is to make them familiar with the gun with lots of practice emphasizing safety. Another thing, don't take him/her out with a large group, especially at first. Start out taking them hunting in a 1 on 1 environment. It's safer and will probably be more enjoyable for them. My dad started taking me out duck hunting when i was 3 and let me carry a shotgun when I was 7 and developed good firearm safety at an early age under his guidance. Also, make it fun for them and they'll probably be hooked forever. Good luck!
