I just bought a new PSE stinger yesterday and im gonna start practicing up for this fall. Im wondering if just a cheap golf range finder would work the same as one made for hunting. Or any advise on what i should buy? thanks.

Treestands are more entertaining as you get to see alot more, but I would suggest a ground blind to a first time bowhunter. Ground blinds are safer, easier to setup and provide more concealment both visual and scent. As for rangefinders I have had very good luck with Leupold RX1000tbr, but for just bowhunting and ranging shorter distance you would probably do fine with the cheaper Leupolds, Redfields, Nikons...

when it comes to tree stand hunting DONOT take anything for granted use the safety equipment safty harness ect. if you buy a climber make sure all parts on the climber are correctly put together. if you use a hanging stand always position the stand so that when you get to the top step you can easliy step off onto the stand. Ive used a hanging stand for 15 or so years and when I get in trouble is steping on or steping off the stand and there is nothing like having a stand flop to the side and you cant get your foot far enough over to get to the step so you hang there.  not good. one other thing never and i do mean never ware gloves when climbing up or down. this was the only time that i fell the gloves got caught someway and im falling 10 ft trying not to land on a stump or stick. But to be staight with you i wouldnt hunt any other way.

I'll second what Buckmaster said, the Leupold RX is a great rangefinder.  The TBR means True Ballistic Range and this fine little technology allows you to get straight line range (what you need for shooting) with any sort of elevation.  Can't tell you how happy I am with the RX.

Wild game in.. makes a good rangefinder for right around $100. For a 1st time bow hunter that is only shooting out to like 30-40 yards this finder would be fine. The ones that do the angle and give the true yards are nice but not needed for just sitting in a tree, the yardage isnt that far off. Good luck
