Entry-level rangefinder

My 13 year old is into archery hunting and has missed a number of deer due to mis-judging distance.  (who hasn't?)  Anyway, I would like to buy him a rangefinder for his birthday but have no intention of spending major coin to do so.

Can a decent rangefinder be had (true distance would be nice but not necessary) without spending too much money?  If so, which one would you recommend?

I have a Nikon laser 440 Laser in camo. paid $140 for it new a few years ago, but they don't make them anymore.

My buddy just bought one last week off of Bismanonline.com for $80 used and he's really happy with it as well.

It has worked great for me and can be easily read in low light. If I was looking for a cheap range finder this is the one I would get for sure.

I see ebay has a few of the 440's, but most are over priced.

I had a Bushnell ARC and would not recommend it. It was horrible in low light and it was about $200.

Hope that helps.
My sincere thanks to all the men and women who have/are serving this great country. Freedom isn't Free.

I got the Halo for christmas last year and it is an accurate range finder but if you leave the battery in when you store it the battery drains for some reason. I just take the battery out after every time I use it.
