Lost Pup/Get a Shock Collar

I've been debating on posting this all afternoon and decided to try to turn a "bad" into a "good".  I lost my Sadie Mae  Blaze this afternoon when she ran out in the highway directly in front of a truck.  I was on the fence with getting a shock collar and if she'd had one she'd be asleep in her kennel now instead of a box in the garage.  I almost had the same incident last summer with a check cord I couldn't grab and luckily it whipped around a fence post before she got to the road.  I thought I had her broke of the "blinders, deafness and fixation".  With the deep snow and against my wife's wishes, I'd been letting her out off leash to "potty" and get some exercise.  She'd watch out the kitchen window to see if my neighbor had his dogs out and she loved to run with them.  My wife had just left to get a new refrigerator.

For some reason(and I don't give a damn what it was); when I let her out this afternoon, she took off straight down the hill and directly in front of a car.  No chance for the driver to stop. I can muster a very commanding tone and it was of absolutely no matter.  Now she's gone and the kids watched me carry her up the hill and bring her in the garage. That was beyond pain.  I CAN'T WAIT for the shock in the morning when I wake up and remember what happened.

I don't deserve another dog. The kids do.  Things really happen fast  and a flippant indiscretion can be horrifying and permanent.  I'm hoping her breeder doesn't think I'm a POS.

Use the check cord/treats; That's great and wonderful.  GET A SHOCK COLLAR.  This is surreal.

So sorry for your loss.  That is a horrible feeling when your dog runs out and you have no way of stopping it.  Don't hit yourself so hard.  As hard as somethings are you learn for the future.  My lab is 5.5 years old and I thought she was good and conditioned to our front yard and the day after opening pheasant season we were in the front yard and she saw my neighbor and darted across a busy street.  I yelled at the top of my lungs for her to stop and she kept going.  Luckily the car stopped roughly 2 feet before smacking her.  I was sick for a week or so afterwards replaying what could have happened and I felt it was my fault as well.  When they have their minds made up sometimes they just go.  Again sorry for what happened it is a sad day to loose your little buddy.  Best of wishes to you and your kids!

Guys, I really appreciate the sentiments.

GET THE BEST SHOCK COLLAR YOU CAN AFFORD AND DON'T USE IT AS PUNISHMENT.

In fact, now I believe punishment is of no benefit to the dog or you.  The command is imperative.   Make the dog want to obey the command. I failed at this. I don't know.

She'd duck and hide if I even touched a rolled up magazine in the house(SHOCKCOLLAR); but still grab things she KNEW she wasn't supposed to chew and go under the end table(gloves, boots, etc).

So now,  she realizes "NO" means "NO".  GET A SHOCK COLLAR.

That sucks!

I know what you mean though.  Pretty sure my GSPs are 11 and 10 yrs old because of their shock collars.  There are a number of times getting some electrons have kept them out of harms way.

The best thing I did for my pup was get a shock collar.  Listening to me "most of the time" simply is NOT good enough.  My goal in training my dog was for him to heed attention to EVERY command I give him.  Now he listens like a champ and I have shocked him only 2 times in the last year.  If he has the collar on all I have to do is touch the 'tone" button and he is at my becon call.  Having a dog that listens very well is not only a dream to be around, but will also help protect he or she from themselves.  Sorry for your loss SVN.  Nice of you to try help others prevent tragedy.

svnmag sorry for your loss. it's always tough losing a loved one. hindsight always gives us points to reflect on things we could have done differently, but don't let it drive you nuts.  don't beat yourself up too bad.  dogs and kids, we love 'em to death.  we try to raise them right, but sometimes they're just gonna do what they're gonna do in spite of everything we've taught them.  cherish the time you had with your pup and savor the good memories!

svnmag, Man its a tuff one. I really think your blaming yourself for something out of your control. I would think the same thing wishing I should have done this or that. It was your dogs time, god decides that one, not us. Dont blame yourself. Your dog was doing what dogs do.  Your not a POS. Get another dog for the kids and YOU and be easy on yourself. Remember, god controls these things, not us.

You've missed the point, svnmag concluded that it indeed was within his control.  He's being a stand up guy.  With his post and honesty he's also doing what he can to save others from a similar situation.  He's offering everone who opens this thread an opportunity to learn at his considerable expense.

I think you missed my point. I think the guy feels bad enough theway it is. I am saying he does not have to blame himself for the rest of his life over this. I know he is a stand up guy and is warning people. Why is it that when everytime someone posts a comment on here someone has to always find a negative out of it? I was standing up for the guy and feel bad for him and his family. Dont make a negative out of a positive. Everybody has the right to their opinion, I will giveyou that but dont turn my words around into something it is not. Dont know you, dont wantto argue. I hope this does not affend you. Hell, i just like to hunt and fish just like you! Happy New Years to you and your family!

I agree - I use a shock collar and I dont know how many times my dog has jumped up on the road / or at home runs out into the street when playing hunting etc etc when a car is coming and I dont see it.   A quick "come" blurts out of my mouth before I can even think collar.   I have just been lucky - could of easily went the other way.  None of them had anything to do with the collar.
Stay thirsty my friends

My condolences to you and your family svnmag.  There's not much more I can say to help you or your family other than I'll keep you in my prayers.

Really sorry for your loss svn...I do like what you wrote here just for the fact that a shock collar does have to be used properly and the dog has to be trained with it.  I know that I didn't use mine properly right away and I'm glad it didn't have any negative affects on my dog.
It is folly to assume my awesome lies dormant.

BTW.  Something like this can happen to the best trained dog in the world.  It can happen so fast.  Don't beat up on yourself too much.

sorry for your loss, dude, and that you had to participate in it.  i agree with your advice, i was convinced after a near-miss with my brittany pup. turned out many years later that she'd get out of the backyard/fence and get hit by a truck in town, so now she is a slower, three-legged pointer who wears a collar when we're out on any kind of trek. beat myself up about that one, too, as you are now - but as in all of our life's pain and memories you and your family can grow.  when you're ready, add another member to your family (can't replace the ones we lose, just fill some of the void with another to love) and yes, a collar will help in many cases, but there are still those where it is between dog and the world without your influence...
