Looking for a sonar/gps combo and see the Lowrance HDS7 is on sale at Cabelas, is this a good unit or something to avoid?

I would like to hear from folks with first-hand knowledge before I spend that kind of money on a unit so fire away.

There have been some issues with the HDS 5&7 allowing water to get inside.  I think they have that all fixed, and should be good to go with newer units.

I have the HDS8 with StructureScan and love it.  If you plan on getting StructureScan you might want to think about going bigger than the 7.  If not the 7 should work just fine.

They had water problems with all the HDS models including the 10, watched my buddy pour a bunch of water out of his in the 2010 DWC. I had a 7 last year and didn't have a single problem with it, really liked it.

I bought this unit two years ago and love it. As mentioned before if you want the structure scan also u might want to go bigger w an 8 or 10. But I had no problems at all and love how you can get the navi chips and I like to use the 3d to locate pockets on the backside of islands or drop offs. I put it on my boat before we went to  Kaptogoma and was blowing the others out  of the water w fish caught and size just by using the 3d mode to locate possible hot spots!! I enjoy mine alot ! Hope it works as well for you!

Yup, keep it dry. The hd5 on the front of my boat got a bit to wet and it now works about half of the time. Takes about an hour for it to clear up and be readable. I still us it as I am waiting for it to completely die before I spend the chunk of cash again

Call Lowrance Customer Service 1-800-628-4487. Technicians and representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. CST.

Have your serial number ready and explain the problem.  The HDS units have a 2 year warranty.  If it is a case or screen sealing issue they might help you beyond the warranty period.
