My thoughts and prayers to his family....IndyCar lost much more than a great driver.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

Very sad deal yesterday. Not the most regular Indy Car watcher but I did enjoy seeing Wheldon run, pretty good talent.

They simply need to slow those cars down at the big tracks that were built strictly for NASCAR.  225mph into the corner is asking for a disaster and unfortunately it happened this past weekend. Indy Racing League is going to have to make changes or no longer compete on the big NASCAR 1.5 mile tracks.

I was sick today watching your boy Jr talk about the crash.. Comments of I couldnt imagine what the family is going through and this and that.  It was like he totally forgot he had gone throught it with his dad.. Is Jr just that stupid??

Sotaman- I say that too and kind of  thought what? But Wheldon's kids are very young which makes the situation all the more difficult and maybe that's what he was referring to.

Obviously he was referencing the kids involved here. Wheldon's 2 sons ages 2 and 7 months now have to grow up without a dad.

When Sr was killed JR knew well of the risks involved with auto racing, that was a terrible situation and I am guessing JR still thinks about it every day of his life. Now a widow and 2 young sons make it a pretty sad situation.

Was watching some SPEED channel coverage last night, auto racing has gotten so much safer over the past few years that we tend to forget the huge risk these guys face, a tragic reminder of what can happen when racing.

Based off the quote that ESPN provided he didnt seem to hint at kids I was just in shock watching him and he seemed almost distant to his ordeal.

I am totally guessing but 10 1/2 years after Sr's accident, I have a hunch that JR has replayed that way too many times and knows the feelings that were there in 01'.

The 1.5's for Indycar's are like the superspeedways for Nascar.  It's not if, it's when will a big wreck occur.  They travel in packs at 225 mph.  Not to mention there are a large number of "inexperienced" drivers in these Indycar events it seem, those who just don't know what to do in racing situations that put them 3 x 6 or 7 or 8 at 225 mph.  All the "good" drivers talk about it before the race, there are just certain people they trust and don't.

Gotta give it to the drivers, they have kahunas to get into an open cockpit race car and do what they do.  With the new Indycars next year, they are planning to be able to slow the cars down with adjustable HP.  Turbos simply, more boost or less.  Yes, maybe a bit of speed loss will help, but the cars are still going to be in packs.  200hp or 800hp, with all the downforce they have, a nice smooth track will have them all right on each other.

It's a shame Wheldon passed away.  As good as ambassador of a sport as there could be.  I don't follow Indycar too close but Wheldon always did a good job.  Hopefully the accident will bring forth a new safety era similar to the Dale Sr. accident did in Nascar.

First should have been "saw" not "say" sorry.

Those cars shouldn't have been at that track. They aren't made to run with that kind of banking or any kind of bump racing.

As for Jr. I'll cut him a little slack. Stuff like this probably bring back a lot of bad memories and I don't think he is known for his great quotes.

This might be of interest to some of you. Paul Dana was the last driver killed in Indy car racing. His widow is a High school friend of mine and she also is from Bismarck. When her husband died on the track I think she was 2 months pregnent at the time.
