I happen to really like the Scheels in Bismarck.Sure you have the younger part time college students working there trying to get by. But you also have some guys in the hunting and fishing depts that are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Some have worked there since I was a kid way back when.
I'm just glad we have a store with such a great selection near bye I guess. And they seem to be more than happy to sponsor local events that have to deal with sports and the outdoors as well.

By the looks of some of the post on the other thread some of you come off as real know it alls that I wouldn't really want to help either. Heck you don't need the help since you do know it all.
Some folks brag up cabelas allot and to tell you the truth the only thing that impresses me about those stores are the mounts and the sheer size of the buildings.

The only complaint I have about Scheels is that I hate that they did away with layaway, I know allot of folks that feel that way. I wish they would bring it back, at least for things like firearms and bows optics and such.

I agree!!!      Having been a part-time Scheel's employee back a few years ago, the know it alls are easy to pick out because you can't tell them anything  and you can almost see the chip residing on their shoulder when they walk in.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

+1 on scheels.
i buy most of my sporting goods there, some online but only if the price is out of whack locally.  and, according to my wife, that's a lot of spending in support of scheels : )
they restring my racquets, and i've found their advice re hunting/fishing/dogs as good or better than other places.
glad we have one in minot!

I believe Scheels 6 months, 0% is meant to replace the layaway plan.

I have no problems with Scheels in Bismarck. A little competition wouldn't hurt things though. Doesn't matter what store your going into people are gonna have complaints. Helps to go into these stores with a bit of knowledge on what your buying beforehand instead of relying solely on the salesman.

what i got out of the 4 pages posted on my last thread in the whopping 20 or so hours before it got locked cuz people couldnt play nice was overwhelmingly negative reports of poor customer service. i believe i speak for everybody when i say that the thing that most CUSTOMERS want from a store of any kind is acceptably prompt, courteous service and to not have smoke blown up their ass. if a person does not know the answer to a question to admit it and either find another salesman that knows or make a phonecall to the manufacturer. do not insult the customer by lying to them.

in my opinion the good salesmen and managers need to do a better job of policeing their department and taking more pride in returning this situation to what was once outstanding customer service or they will undoubtedly lose more customers like myself.

When at scheels for fishing they treat you really well in Bismarck!! Went Ice fishing in Canada this winter, when I asked what I should use, they showed me what they used up there. These guys get out and fish different areas ( Tobin, Lake Winnepeg, Lake sakakawea, DL, and of course the missouri river). Sometimes it's getting to know these guys and not thinking you are the best fishermen in the world. You can always learn by listening!! Alot of these products just come out and they know as much as you. For instance we bought the I-Pilot, when we ask the salesman how it would work, he explained to us. We asked if the I-Spot would work in the current on the river. His reply was he didn't know, alot better than lying. After using it on the river the thing works great. Thank You Scheels!!!

First of all, we in Bismarck have very little choice where to go.  Second, you have to have "your guys."  I have mine, and always get treated well.  I consider them friends.  When they are not there, I have often been disappointed in the level of knowledge and how I'm treated.

Over all I've been extremely satisfied with Scheels service! I've bought over 30 guns through them thru the years plus bows, ammo,clothing,etc..... In fact one year my wife figured out I spent more at Scheels than we spent on groceries!!!!!! They are not always the cheapest, but they service what they sell and overall have quality people working in their different departments. Day in, Day out they do an excellent job!

Yeah, the Scheels in Bismarck is ok.
I have my few folks in the Gun Department I talk to and order things thru when I need  to.
However--- my BIGGEST gripe IS the snotty new workers ( sometimes) Im sorry but some new hire 18 year old punk has little to NO knowledge about what they are trying to sell....
Id appreciate it if they just flat out admitted it, and asked for guidance from a fellow employee.
That and the weapons selection in house SUCKS.... almost anything I want/like is a special order item...
I know who orders the wepaonry there  ( I don't want names floating on the web, and  you all know who Im talking about anyways) and he NEEDS to listen to what people want..
He needs to stop ordering random junk.

Id get into the ungodly high prices of used weapons and the quality of used weapons they let in the store... but that is for another time.

I'm the devil's son..... call me young gun.

Be careful who you let work on your stuff when you take it to Scheels. I took my Dren in for a tuneup a couple years ago. They messed it up worse than it was, totally out of tune. The regular archery tech was not in, so a different guy worked on it. Most of the young guys at Scheels are really sharp when it comes to the new stuff, not that one. Now I built my own press and do my own work, so I guess it was good in a sense.

You just never know what to expect at Scheels. One day you get real good service and you think things are turning around, and the next time you go in its back to the same old thing. Three salesmen talking to each other right behind you when you are obviously looking for some help. And when you finally ask them a question they act like you interupted their coffee break. And then their buddy or higher dollar customer comes in and their gone. Sorry for my rant. It must not bother me too much as I keep going back.

Scheels doesn't do a very good job of bore sighting your rifle.  I just bought a 30.06 from them and took it home and used my Tasco bore sighting kit, and they were way off.

I wouldn't blame that on the store; that would be the tool and person operating it that is at fault. Been through that myself, waste of time and ammo so now have a regular and a laser bore sighter. Whenever possible DYI is best, as we tend to be easier on ourselves for mistakes.

I pretty much like ALL of the sporting goods choices we have in ND.  Folks sometimes forget that along with the shops in Bis/Man, Minot, GF/EGF, and Fargo, we also have lots more choices.  You can buy or at least order locally in Williston, Dickinson, Devils Lake, Jamestown, Valley City, Ellendale, Linton, Carrington, Cavalier, Jolliette, Rubgy, Whapeton, and I'm probably missing a bunch.

Lots of places in the country that folks in cities a lot bigger than the big 4 in ND have only their local Walmart or their home computer to rely upon.

IMO, we're downright SPOILED when it comes to choice.

Nice thing about Scheels is that they wil stock the items we want and not justwhat Corporate tells them to stock.

The big chain stores all have the corporate list and that is it.

A good example is our club in Fargo planned a trip to Lk Winnipeg ice fishing. Scheels ordered in some new products they did not previously carry that were on our wish list.

As with anything. It is in the consumers best interest to get to know their salesman. I have my go too guy and we have become friends. He knows what I want and expect and I know the service I will get.

Mixed reviews.  I have $200.00 worth of gift cards and asked them if they could order a rifle barrel for my CVA and the guy said they really don't do that and tried to sell my a Thompson.  Well since I already have the CVA and I did buy it here I was hoping to buy the barrel since I have the gift cards.  So after awhile he got a manager and he told me the same story and then quoted me $100.00 higher than you can buy them on the web straight from the manufacturer.
