I have heard stories of guys finding broadheads, chunks of lead, etc. but
thought it was pretty cool story.

Wasp in the Skull Buck

As the story goes, this deer was harvested with a bow on Dec. 30th by Jay Trudell of Delafield Wisconsin. On New Years Eve, Jay took the deer to a friend's house to be butchered. They skinned it for a shoulder mount, stopping right behind the ear.

The buck dressed out at 175 pounds and has a good layer of fat on its rump. Every indication was that this was a normal, healthy deer. After the taxidermist capped the skull, he cut the skull plate to remove the antlers. As he finished the cut, he hit metal. Jay got the skull and antlers back and cleaned them. The hide was completely healed and did not give any indication that there was an injury. The threaded portion of the broadhead had snapped off.

The deer had been shot in a prior season with a Wasp Hammer broadhead. It entered the brain but did not kill the deer. It also passed through the hinge of the jaw and had grown over with bone and prevented the jaw from opening all but the smallest amount. The brain was infected around the puncture wound.

Heree you see an aging jaws next to the skull to show how the jaw hinge should look.

Here you can see the opposite healthy side

The bone had grown over the broadhead and through the vent in the blade and bridged the gap.

The upper left arrow shows how much hinge movement was allowed in the jaw, The opening and closing of the mouth had worn a curved area away

There must be some less-than-lethal hunters where Jays hunts because 2 years prior to this, Jay's brother shot deer with a damaged hindquarter. Upon removing the meat, they discovered a portion of a broadhead embedded in femur (hindquarter) Pictured is the bone from the opposite (healthy) side of the same deer as a comparison. Both of these injuries were at least a year old. Whitetails are tough animals.

Very interesting story actually, I appreciate this post.  Hopefully this shot was just a fluke and someone isn't out there trying to shoot deer in the head with his bow.

Well technically, you said that it is a deer skull because you used a double negative

What makes you think it's not a deer skull? I have no idea on these things, so some info would be great.

Please enlighten us as to what kind of skull we have here?  If you don't want to post it here send me a PM, I am not sure I understand.  It does appear the pictures distort the height and width of the objects....Mr. Jeremy.

The photos are not in their native resolution, the images are distorted. They were not uploaded in their native resolution because it  probably made up for some ungodly file size or whoever posted the photos had a crappy internet connection so they downsized it, effectively distorting the images.  Looks like a deer skull to me.

I agree. Eye sockets appear to be more forward rather than to the side. However, it could just be something that's distorted on the photo. The nasal portion of the skull also seems pretty thick for a deer, but again may just be the photo.

I probably shouldn't say this on this site but I will anyway.

When I was a young kid, just starting to bowhunt, my buddy was pushing some trees for me and I waited on the end in hopes of shooting any whitetail deer that came by. Well a nice big doe came by and I took a shot. I hit her in a very similar area as this buck. The arrow stuck right into her cheek and she ran off.
Well the next weekend we were doing that same thing and I heard my buddy laugh out loud. I wondered what the heck he was laughing about. Sure enough here comes the same doe running right by me with the arrow flopping around still stuck to her face.
I don't know what ever ended up happening to her.

Keep in mind I was a very young kid and took an ill-advised shot with a bow that hardly had enough power to go thru a deer in the first place.

on a side note: my friend shot a bull elk with an entire arrow and broadhead in the cavity that he found when gutting it out.
Go big or go home

I did alot of things as a kid that I wouldn't do now, its maturing as a hunter, looking back and knowing the difference. All I wanted to do back then is kill something. Im no longer that kid, although at times I wish I could go back, times were much simpler. I've got a good friend thats a game warden, he has stories that are similar to mine. Were not born with ethics; hopefully we learn them through life and its lessons. I can appreciate your story and I bet your alot more careful in your shot selection today because of it.
