everyone make sure your stands are secure. your straps are tight, strong, and not super old and make sure the stand is safe. i fell about 12-15 feet out of the tree last night cause it was an old strap and it snapped once i got all im weight in the stand. i got lucky and only have a sore knee this morning. i dont want this to happen to anyone else. stay safe this season

Good post.  I was sitting in my stand last weekend thinking about how I take those straps for granted.  We can't buy a hang-on for $30 and expect it to last 5 years without some serious maintenance.

I always use and extra ratchet strap on my hang-on and ladder stands for a little peice of mind.

Glad to hear you're ok.

I ALWAYS use a 2 ratchet straps on every stand. Also, buy a safety harness, the vest types work great and that $100 could save your life.

there were 2 straps on this stand and the top one broke and the stand was like a trap door. and i smoked the ground. it was scary as hell. my backpack saved me from hitting my head on the ground then the first thing i did was make sure my legs moves. one of the scariest moments of my life.

Had a buddy fall a few years ago when his step broke 20 feet up in a tree. Broke some ribs and was lucky that was all.

Dang, glad you are okay!  I get worried about the cheap stands that I am using.  I have been hanging on them to make sure they hold before i step on.

Has anyone tried the climbing stands that have a nice seat and arm rest?  I would like a non ladder stand that I can sit in all day for the upcoming rut hunts.

Man, that is pretty scary stuff. Glad you're ok. I half-a$$ed my stand this year, but I do plan on securing it more before I go "all out".

Good post b/z this stuff gets overlooked way to often.

I fell15 ft last yr b/z of an old strap holding up my stand.  Completely my fault just didn't ever think something like that would ever happen to me.  I shattered my L1 vertebrate and was in a form fitting cast for 4 months.  Not fun at all, but I'm not complaining by any means b/z I was told by the doctors numerous times I should have been paralyzed, I am very lucky.  I was not wearing a proper harness at the time either.  For those ppl that say they are to uncomfortable wear just learn to deal with it b/z laying in a hospital bed for 5 days sucks trust me.  Ladder stands do the trick for me now.

Moving a stand three years ago, I fell almost twenty feet and broke my ankle! Took me over an hour to crawl to my pick up and then had to get out and open two gates to get out of there!  8 weeks in a boot, didn't heal, ended up with an MRI and found a bone chip and damaged cartlidge. Then another 8 weeks in a boot!!!  My ankle will never be 100%  No cheap thin straps on my stands anymore!!!!  I double and triple strap everything now!!!

Thats a good idea.  How do you tighten your chains?

Glad to hear you are OK!!  I check and re-strap all my stands prior to the season as they can get weather or chewed on by squirrels!!  A safety strap is a must also and I try and clip mine on before I even step onto my stand platforms.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."
